Monday Morning Update

February 22, 2010

Pre-College Summer Program: In July, the College will offer four one-week pre-college programs for talented high school students entering grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. Participants will choose courses like Business and Entrepreneurship, Climate and Global Studies and American Cinema. Coordinator Peter Ubertaccio, director of the Martin Institute, says, "This exclusive program is a wonderful opportunity for families looking down the road at Stonehill as a college destination for their sons or daughters. It gives them a chance to get to know the campus and all that we offer here." For more, contact Ubertaccio at pubertaccio@stonehill.edu or visit here.

Historical Perspective: Since 2006, the Salameno Lecture has been bringing top historians to campus for public lectures. Next Monday, March 1st, the series will host award-winning historian Peter Coclanis who will examine the American South from a global perspective. All are welcome at the lecture, which will be held in the Martin Institute at 4 p.m. For more, visit here.

Shutter Island: When the credits roll, you won't see his name listed beside Leonardo DiCaprio's, but Senior Admissions Counselor Andrew Leahy '05 is in Martin Scorsese's latest movie, Shutter Island. In addition to helping the College recruit new students, Leahy has been an extra in several movies and, in Shutter Island, he plays a World War II German soldier serving at the Dachau concentration camp, which is part of a flashback scene in the film. Model Student: A production intern for the Rachel Ray Show, Communication major Caitlin Murgia '11 recently modeled a hot new fashion item on the show -- Pajama Jeans. For a clip of Murgia wearing the ultra comfortable jeans, visit here.

Lent's Green Option: Want to use the season of Lent to be kinder to the environment? For example, how about a silent Sunday with no television, radio, ring tones and no travel after church? The College's Environmental Stewardship Committee has a day-by-day list of practical steps you can take to minimize consumption, reduce waste and conserve precious resources. For more, visit here.

Holy Cross Saint: In October, Blessed André Bessette, C.S.C. (1845-1937) will become the first member of the Congregation of Holy Cross to be canonized as a saint. Brother André spent most of his life as a humble doorkeeper who was known for his ministry to the sick and needy in Montreal. His spirit, however, is present at Stonehill in several ways. First Lady of Jazz: This Thursday, the College and the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra will pay tribute to Mary Lou Williams, the First Lady of Jazz, with a special Centennial Concert in the Martin Institute beginning at 8 p.m. Featuring music from across Williams' half-century career, the concert will showcase her swing-era classics, modernist explorations, and more.
