Presentation at the Lily Conference in Traverse City, Michigan
Pedagogy Travel Grant
Project description: Request for registration fees for four Stonehill faculty members, Todd Gernes, Sue Mooney, Carole Calo and Jim Lee, to attend the 9th Annual Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching and to present "Using Learning Communities to Foster Personal and Social Responsibility."
The Lilly Conference is a prestigious forum that has the theme of evidence-based learning and teaching with four major subthemes of engaged learning, promoting social responsibility, e-learning, and creating communities of learners. As you can see, the conference theme and subthemes coincide with the design of Stonehill's learning communities. The conference will be from September 24 -27, 2009 in Traverse City, Michigan.
Benefit: The primary benefit will be a significant professional development experience for the four faculty members. The conference program (that will be emailed to Stacy Grooters for your review) lists a wide variety of presentations that relate to our general education curriculum and offer the opportunity for benchmarking our approaches. Certainly, the chance to share our efforts with other institutions will provide national visibility for Stonehill College.
Community Outreach Plan: We will join a Teaching Roundtable to both provide an overview of our presentation and to summarize our learning from attending other presentations.
Budget: When our presentation at this conference was accepted, the three full-time faculty realized that we had already committed most (and in one case entirely spent) our faculty development funds for this year. Todd Gernes has agreed to fund the balance of travel and lodging portion of the expenses out of his General Education Budget. We request funding only for the conference registration of $395 per person for a total of $1580.
