Social Justice and Comparative Public Policy in Peru

Through the Martin Institute, Stonehill College has applied for a grant through the U.S. Department of Education to fund a 4-week Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad (GPA) Program to Peru during the summer of 2010 (June 28 to July 24).

Details

If this application is successful, the grant will provide funding to allow 7 public school teachers and 7 Stonehill faculty members to participate in a unique travel and learning opportunity, "Social Justice and Comparative Public Policy in Peru." Participants will travel to Lima, Canto Grande, Cuzco, Machu Pichu, and La Oroya.

Goals

The objectives of this study abroad program are:

  • to expose all 14 participants to cultural, historical, political, social, economic, educational, and environmental issues crucial to a better understanding of Peru and the region of South America, the indigenous populations within, and the legacy of colonialism;
  • to enhance all participants' capacity to integrate their knowledge and to implement their experiences in the secondary and post-secondary classroom curricula, and through instructional meetings, exchanges, field visits, research and social and cultural activities;
  • to provide opportunities to develop sustainable linkages with professionals and institutions from the educational, cultural and economic environment in Peru and to enhance collaboration and dissemination of curricular efforts between Stonehill College and area school districts.

Project Phases

This Fulbright project consists of 4 distinct phases:

  1. Recruitment and selection of participants;
  2. Pre-departure preparation and orientation consisting of 8 mandatory, 3-hour orientation sessions starting in March;
  3. Four (4) weeks of study, travel and research in Peru;
  4. Curriculum development, dissemination and follow-up activities which will include the development of curriculum units related to Peru and South America.

Eligibility

Full-time faculty whose disciplines are in humanities, social sciences and education, secondary education teachers whose course load is in humanities, and elementary school teachers.

Important Dates

  • Application packages are due on or before February 5, 2010, 4:00 p.m.
  • Notification will be made available by February 26, 2010.

Application Package Elements

Complete application packets must include the following:

  • Current curricula vitae;
  • One-page rationale for why your participation would enhance your current coursework, including how your given student population would benefit directly;
  • Two-page (maximum) proposal for a curriculum project with specific objectives for the curriculum product (revision and/or development of courses) and anticipated learning outcomes. Please include a current a course syllabus if proposing course revision.
  • Signed letter of commitment pledging to pay $400.00 to cover orientation and pre-departure preparation costs, to attend all pre-departure/orientation activities, to provide all necessary travel documents, and to complete the curriculum project upon return. (Other program costs will be covered by U.S. Department of Education, pending level of funding).

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • The quality or promise of the applicant's work;
  • the significance of contribution that the proposed project will make;
  • the likelihood that the applicant will complete all project requirements; and
  • previous commitment to international education and curriculum development.

Finalists will also be asked for an on-campus interview with members of the Fulbright Selection Committee.
