Learning Communities Society Through the Lens

Society Through the Lens LC Group Photo, Stonehill College, credit: Adam Lampton

"A photograph is worth a thousand words," especially those created by students learning sociology and documentary photography.

In this Learning Community students will learn the art and technique of black and white photography and how to use these skills to capture images that make people take notice of social issues such as racism, sexism, and problems of wealth and poverty in America.

The knowledge they acquire in the sociology class will be connected to the photographs that they take to tell the stories of what they see as they perform community service and/or observe in the greater Brockton, MA area.

Faculty Quotes

  • Professor Adam Lampton, Department of Visual & Performing Arts, Stonehill CollegeThis class has allowed me to expand students' (and my own) definitions of art in general and photography in particular. Photography's power to document, critique and understand our society is unique and, unfortunately, rarely exploited in the classroom. -- Adam Lampton
  • Professor Ken Branco, Department of Sociology & Criminology, Stonehill CollegeI love teaching this LC. It allows me to teach “outside the classroom box” and enables students to connect ideas about social problems with their experiences in the community and their observations with the camera. It’s one thing to read about poverty, racism, and unequal opportunity in American society. It’s quite another to try to mentor and tutor a child who is trying to overcome the effects of these problems, or photograph the neighborhoods where that child lives. -- Ken Branco

What Is a Learning Community?

At Stonehill College, Learning Communities (LC’s) are two classes enrolling a common cohort of students that are linked during an academic term around an interdisciplinary theme.

I have enjoyed Society through the Looking Glass immensely. It has taught me that sociological issues are present everywhere, even in simple photographs. I have become more aware and knowledgeable of current events in America. I also plan to use my photography skills in the future beyond this Stonehill class.
