Gunawardena brings to Stonehill an extensive research background. Most recently, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow at Williams College working in the area of fundamental symmetries, precision measurements and spectroscopy. Gunawardena also oversaw undergraduate research while at Williams.
His doctoral research at Purdue was in the area of coherent and quantum control where he developed an 'atomic' homodyne frequency-modulation scheme for detecting weak atomic or molecular transitions. Gunawardena served as a graduate teaching assistant at Purdue's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also taught physics at the University of Cincinnati and mechanical engineering at the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka.
