Winners Announced for Martin Institute Student Art and Writing Contests
April 14, 2009

As diverse as its theme of globalization, the Martin Institute's second annual Student Art and Writing Contests featured submissions from a range of mediums that investigate and respond to globalization.
Ellen Brown '09 and Erin Horan '11 were both chosen as the 2009 Martin Fellows in Letters while John Hanawalt '10 was named the 2009 Martin Fellow in Arts. John McGowan '10 was named a Fellow in Arts Honorable Mention.
Brown's poem entitled My Mother the Huntress details a mother's meticulous search for a job while Horan's essay "Slumdog" is an English Word explores the global impact of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
Hanawalt's art piece Little Boxes is a collage of images which reflect the complexity and ambiguity of globalization. McGowan's animated short, Pangea and the Song Heard round the World, tells the story of how a multi-cultural band was formed and the community work it was able to accomplish through its success around the world.
Selected by a jury of last year's Art Contest Fellows, the winners received a $500 Honorarium for their work, which will be on display in the Martin Institute for the next academic year.
