Troubleshoot IP Address

If you cannot connect to the Internet or register to the Stonehill Network, please check and make note of your Internet Protocol (IP) address.

To determine your computer's IP address or release and renew your IP, do the following:

What your IP address should look like:

  • 10. (example: 10.1.1.2) - All valid IP addresses are of the format: 10.x.x.x  If your IP address is 10.x.200.x, your computer has not been registered; please call the Help Desk (x4357) for assistance.

Other examples:

  • 192.168. (example: 192.168.1.2) - An IP address that begins with 192.168. is typically assigned by a personal router.  If you have a personal router setup, please disconnect it as it can interfere with the campus network.
  • 169.254. (example: 169.254.1.2) - If you have a 169.254. IP address, it means your computer is unable to obtain a valid IP address from the network. You may attempt to obtain a valid IP address by releasing and renewing.  You should also try a different network jack (if available) or cable.
  • 0.0.0.0 - If your IP address is 0.0.0.0, it means your computer currently has no IP address.  Verify that your cable is plugged in.  You may attempt to obtain a valid IP address by renewing.
  • Other (example: any other IP address) - If you have another IP address listed, it may be one you obtained from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Or, it might be a static IP address configured in your computer's network settings

If your IP address does NOT begin with 10, you will not be able to connect to the Stonehill Network. This may be because you have not registered, or because you need to release and renew your IP address.
