Housing Selection 2009 - Lottery Numbers

In addition to merit points, all full-time enrolled resident students will receive a randomly assigned lottery number.

In the event that two or more groups of students have an identical number of merit points, we will use the lowest assigned number in each group as a final tie-breaker to determine who will choose a room first.

Example:  John and Joe are rising sophomores and have applied to live in a double room next year.  Their friends Bill and Bruce are also rising sophomores and have also applied to live in a double room.  They would like to know which of them will select a room first on their lottery night.  To determine who selects first, we look at the following information:

John has 15 merit points and was randomly assigned lottery number 75
Joe has 15 merit points and was randomly assigned lottery number 237

Bill has 15 merit points and was randomly assigned lottery number 371
Bruce has 15 merit points and was randomly assigned lottery number 45.

John and Joe have a combined merit point total of 30 and their best lottery number is 75.  Bill and Bruce also have a combined merit point total of 30, but their best lottery number is 45.  In this example, Bill and Bruce would choose a room before John and Joe.
