2008-2009 Grant Proposals

Lisa Redpath
MENC Eastern Division Conference
Pedagogy Travel Grant

Rationale: The MENC Eastern Division Conference is offering several workshops which relate directly to the classes that I teach here at Stonehill College. For example, Ryan M. Camara is presenting a workshop entitled "World Rhythms: West African Ensemble." This workshop would be particularly beneficial to me because I base many of the drumming concepts that we use in the drum circle on his techniques and philosophies. I have participated in his workshops in the past and I have always found them to be informative, enlightening and professional.

Moreover, I refer to West African Drum and Dance: A Yankadi-Macrou Celebration while preparing lesson plans (written by Kalani and Ryan M. Camara). I will take new techniques and materials gained from this workshop directly to the classroom. Moreover, "Introduction to Frame Drums - Ancient to Modern Techniques" relates directly to the World Instruments and Cultures class which is scheduled to be offered again in the Spring, 2010.

I also plan to share these techniques and information with Dr. Leslie Goldberg who will be offering a class on Latin American music for the first time this spring.

Benefits: Other workshops that will help me to improve my teaching skills include: "Non-Verbal Communication in Conducting," and "Out of the Classroom and Into the Fire with Community Music." These sessions will support the work that I currently do with the Chamber Music and Orchestra students. I will share this information with Professors Rob LePage and Charlene Dahlrymple, the conductors of the Concert Band and Collegiate Chorale.

The most intriguing offerings from this conference will be those which focus on the latest research in music education. There will be several Research Paper Sessions throughout the conference, as well as a full-day of research presentations by Boston University faculty and doctoral students. Recent research has focused on musical cognition, which is the cornerstone of my teaching platform. I am always eager to learn about new discoveries and patterns in music education.
