Monday Morning Update

December 15, 2008

Christmas Spirit: Across campus, we have seen food, coat, blanket, book, and toy drives for people in need. At Lessons and Carols recently, the collection went to a young alumna who is building a library in a Congolese village. We know of two alumni Gerald '56 and Dolores Carrier '58 who are hosting injured soldiers and their families this Christmas. To read about these and other stories of Christmas giving by members of the Stonehill community, visit here.

Gaudete Awards: We note that nine employees recently received Gaudete Awards for service. For giving the College dedicated service for 20 years, we extend appreciation and congratulations to: Helena Bairos, Maria Cabral, Peter Camara, David Pigeon (all from Facilities) Richard Capobianco (Philosophy), Carlos Curley (Mathematics), John Golden (Foreign Languages), Jose Gomes (Athletics), and John Leahy (Recreational Sports).

Martin Institute: The recipients of this year's Joseph W. Martin Outstanding Senior Awards for public service are Nicole Landry '09 and Chris Tirrell '09. They were recognized for their commitment to understanding the meaning of global community which the Martin Institute is exploring thru its two-year theme on globalization. Active as volunteers in numerous service projects since they came to the College, both Landry and Tirrell are also Dean's List students. To learn more about what they have achieved during their educational at Stonehill, visit here.

Annual Report to Donors: Mentioned above, Chris Tirrell is also on the cover of the Annual Report to Donors (ARD) which features a lead story highlighting a service trip that Tirrell and other Stonehill representatives took to Nigeria this past summer. The ARD is a comprehensive 42-page report on Stonehill philanthropy. To obtain a copy, call 508-565-1070. To read the ARD online, visit here.

Outstanding Alumnus: The School of Medicine at St. Louis University recently honored Stonehill alumnus Dr. Robert Burdge '61 by establishing a lectureship in his name. A renowned orthopedic surgeon, Burdge is also a teacher, author, and community volunteer. In 1996, the former biology major received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the College.

Branding Kudos: A Stonehill branding example is seventh on a list of 50 top ideas for developing and executing a brand strategy compiled by University Business. The magazine noted how our marketing division effectively used the headline Many Minds. One Purpose to describe the essence of the institution and how acceptance of the headline became integrated into campus life. For more, visit here.

Holiday Break: Our next issue will be on Monday, January 12, 2009. Season's Greetings to all.
