Laptop Use/Wireless Use

Both Stonehill students and outside users may bring laptops into the library and connect to our network via a wired connection or via wireless. For wired connections, the procedure for connecting to the network is the same for both Stonehill and non-Stonehill patrons. However, the procedure is not the same for connecting to the wireless network. Instructions are available for students at the circulation desk.

Direct Steps to Connect to Wired Network

  1. If you are a community user, you must bring your laptop to the circulation desk.
  2. Stonehill patrons should already have registered in their dorm rooms. If you plug into a port and do no get connectivity, please try to plug into another port. Only a small portion of the wired data ports are live.

Direct Steps to Connect to Wireless Network

  1. To connect to the wireless network, make sure the laptop is on. Open your wireless network settings. You can either double click on the wireless network icon in the system tray or can manually open the settings by going to the Start menu -> Control Panel -> Network Settings. If you have a wireless card, there should be a wireless network connection listed. Double click on the wireless network connection. Windows XP should automatically detect the guest and Stonehill wireless networks.
  2. Stonehill patrons who have a computer log in should choose the Stonehill network. Guests without Stonehill credentials must use the guest network.
  3. If you are a community user, you should be all set once you have connected. Please keep in mind that this wireless network will only allow simple http traffic (i.e. web browsing). All other protocols FTP, VPN, telnet, etc. have been disabled.
  4. Stonehill patrons will need to authenticate in order to use the Stonehill network. Open your web browser. It should automatically direct you to an authentication page. You will need to type in your username and password. Once authenticated, you should be able to browse the internet.
