Finding Books in the Library Catalog
By Subject

Subject searches are based on Library of Congress Subject Headings. Subject headings refer to specific terms which describe the subject matter of an item. A listing of all Library of Congress Subject Heading is available, in a four volume set, in print format behind the reference desk. Please ask at the reference desk for more information.

To locate a book by subject: Reformation -- England

  • Type in Reformation England in order to find materials relating to the Reformation in England  

If search term is not a Library of Congress Subect Heading:  

  • A "cross reference" will be given to let you know what the correct subject heading is. For example, if you search for the subject of garbage, a cross reference will display to alert you that Refuse and Refuse Disposal is the correct subject heading. You will be able to click on a link to see the related items.

See Also References 

  • There are also "see also" references in the catalog. These references give you additional hints about related subjects. To see an example, do a subject search for Refuse and Refuse Disposal. The first item in the list of results reads Refuse And Refuse Disposal -- 14 Related Subjects. Click on the link to see the fourteen related subject headings.
