London Internship

London Internship Program

London, with its population of over seven million, boasts culturally rich museums, art galleries, famous theatres, concert halls and historic buildings. An exciting and cosmopolitan European city, London is a majore political, financial and cultural center, graced with more parks and gardens than any other capital in the world.

Program Requirements & Application Process:

Students participating in the London Internship Program should be juniors or first semester seniors, meet the 3.0 GPA minimum requirement, obtain approval from their major department, receive approval from the Director of International Programs and the Dean of Students, be in good academic and social standing and have no Community Standard violations, and have above average professionalism, motivation, reliability, and communication skills.

Students interested in applying for this program should meet with the Director of International Programs and obtain the necessary materials. In addition, students should meet with their major advisor and their designated Faculty Moderator. Students will need to obtain two faculty recommendation letters in addition to a third letter from a former supervisor. The Fall 2009 Deadline is March 6, 2009 and the Spring 2010 deadline is October 9, 2009. Students should begin the application process by filling out Stonehill's on-line application form here.

Visa requirements:

Students participating in the London internship program are required to obtain a Tier 4 student visa from the British government. The UK Border Agency has issued step by step instructions (pdf) and a checklist (pdf) for U.S. students.

Program Dates:

Fall Semester: Early September - Mid-December (TBA)

Spring Semester: Early January  - Mid-April (TBA)

Credits:

Upon satisfactory completion of the part-time, 20-hour per week internship, the mid-semester and final evaluations from on-site supervisor, a daily professional journal, a research paper, three 4-credit Birkbeck College courses, students will receive 18 credits towards their major, minor, or elective credit as approved by their Department Chair and departmental Faculty Moderator.

London: 3 credits: Pass/Fail, Internship based on Mid-semester and Final Evaluations from Internship Site Supervisor, and Daily Professional Journal; 3 credits: A-F (Stonehill grade), based on Research Paper; Three 4-credit courses: Transfer Credit (need C or better), based on 3 Birkbeck College courses for a total of 18 US semester credits.

Courses: Students select three courses per semester

Students enroll in three 4-credit courses at Birkbeck College during the semester. Students can select from a variety of course options. The courses are taken in the later afternoon or evenings to accommodate the internship work schedule. Students will receive transfer credit if they receive a Stonehill "C" grade or better in each of the courses. At the successful conclusion of the semester, students will receive a total of 18 credits including the other academic components of the program.

Housing:

Housing is arranged through a housing management specialist and students generally live in the Bloomsbury and Russell Square area of London. Flats are fully furnished , generally four to six students per flat, double or triple rooms (depending upon size of room) with one or two bathrooms. All flats are within easy walking distance to London's famous Tube transportation system. Students are housed with other U.S. students who are alos participating in the internship program.

Commuting:

London is a large and vibrant city. Students will be expected to commute using the London Underground or subway to travel to their placement. Students will be instructed on how to purchase Oyster cards for the semester (student discount metro cards). Students may need to commute from a walkable distance to 45 minutes to their site. More information about the commuting distances will be discussed during the in-country orientation program.

Costs:

Students pay Stonehill Tuition and standard double room housing for the London Internship Program. Included in these fees are a part-time internship, (20 hours per week), housing in shared apartments with other internship participants, three 4-credit courses at Birkbeck College, airport pick-up service, in-country orientation program, overseas supplemental insurance through CISI, and support through IIP London throughout the duration of the program. Students are able to utilize all Federal, State, Need and Merit-based financial aid for the London Internship Program.

The program does not include the following costs: Round-trip airfare to London, meals, commuting costs to internship placement, passport and United Kingdom Visa, laundry, gym memberships, personal travel and expenses.

Students participating in the London Internship program are waived the $750.00 Administrative Fee.
