Shields Science Center Construction Project

Science is a central component of the curriculum of liberal arts and sciences and pre-professional programs that Stonehill offers its students. Stonehill College is committed to providing a first-rate science education and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between the sciences and other disciplines, so that its students can become educated citizens for the 21st century.

The mission of the Shields Science Center contains the blueprint for creating the essential infrastructure to achieve these goals.

  • at 89, 630 gross square feet, is 33% larger than MacPháidín Library, the most recent major academic construction project on campus.
  • houses the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology, including laboratories, classroom spaces, and faculty offices.
  • features innovative laboratory spaces that allows the integration of lab and lecture in chemistry and biology labs.
  • houses new state-of-the-art psychology research and teaching labs.
  • is a signature building on campus. Located near the campus entrance from Route 123, it anchors the southern part of campus. To make room for the new Science Center, the circulation roadway through campus was relocated during the summer of 2006.
  • houses the Pettit Atrium which holds 340 - 500 people for events
