Academic Advising Program

Academic Advising at Stonehill spans all four years of the student's education. Every incoming student is assigned an advisor by the Office of Academic Services. The advisor will be either a faculty member or a professional advisor, depending on the student's major and other academic needs. Those students who are undecided about their major will still be assigned an advisor. In addition, they will be able to participate in programs and activities to help them choose a major. The goal of the advisement program is to help each student establish a plan in which they will achieve both their academic and career goals. The advisors in the office of Academic Services are prepared to assist students in: Developing a 4-year academic plan; Choosing or changing majors; Selecting courses each semester.

Academic Counseling

A variety of academic learning modules are available to assist students in "studying smarter, not harder." Academic Services provides assistance in strengthening learning skills such as: Motivation; Goal Setting; Time Management; Note Taking; Reading for Information; Selecting Main Ideas; Test Preparation; Anxiety Reduction. Learning modules are available on an individual basis. See Academic Services for assistance.

First-Year Programs

The Office of Academic Services works closely with new students to make their personal and academic experiences challenging and productive. The office provides programs to help make the transition to a new academic setting a successful one. In addition, Stonehill offers classes which focus on creating a solid foundation for new students during their first year. Below you will find more detailed information on these programs.

"BACK ON TRACK"

We have found that many college students do not know how to study properly. Most students have learned some study skills during their first 12 years of schooling, but they may have not learned the appropriate study strategies that are necessary to succeed in a college environment. One bad grade can lead to frustration, anxiety and eventually result in failure in a course. For many of these students, learning how to study can make a difference in their performance.

In the "Back on Track" program, students learn strategies that can be applied directly to their course material in several one on one sessions. Students will meet with an Advisor for regularly scheduled meetings during the semester. Discussions will take place around the particular study skill(s) each individual students needs to master. Students will be given assignments that need to be completed for the next meeting. An assignment log will be kept as a reality check between the student and the Advisor as the skills are learned and perfected by doing them over and over again. This program is intended to be an academic survival kit for the remaining semesters at Stonehill College. Once the student puts the newly learned strategies into practice, they should see an improvement in their over all performance.

Students Seeking Readmission

In order to be re-admitted to Stonehill: Notify the Office of Academic Services about your interest in returning. You will be sent a "Petition for Re-Admission" to complete and return. In doing so, please make sure that you include a statement in which you detail your reasons for seeking re-admission to Stonehill. When your petition has been received, you will be informed of the status of your petition. If you have pursued studies while you have been away from Stonehill, please include course information in your petition. An official transcript from the College where you took the course(s) will be required as part of your re-admission process. For further information, contact Ms. Shelley Leahy

Transfer Student Services

The Office of Academic Services works closely with the Admissions Office to insure a smooth transition for students who transfer to Stonehill from both two-year and four-year institutions. Once you have been admitted to the College, a preliminary "credit evaluation" will be done, and you will notified of the number of courses that will be accepted in transfer. Once you have committed to Stonehill by sending in the required deposit, a detailed "course evaluation" will be done and you will be asked to schedule an appointment with Kathleen Joint, Academic Advisor for transfer students, in the Office of Academic Services. At that time, your transcript will be reviewed and you will develop a program of study and register for the next semester. For additional information on transferring to Stonehill College see the Admissions page for Transfer Information.
