On February 9, 2007, Brockton photographer Stanley A. Bauman died. Although a bachelor with no children, Bauman left behind an extraordinary legacy . In 1998, after receiving the President's medal at Stonehill College's annual President's Dinner, Bauman announced he would leave his entire life's work to the college after his death. The collection which includes over 500,000 negatives from the 1930s-2003 along with numerous prints, slides, scrapbooks and artifacts were moved the five miles from Bauman's home in Brockton, Massachusetts to its new home at Stonehill on Monday, July 23, 2007.
The Stonehill Archives and Historical Collections department staff are currently working on a long-term project to process the collection to ensure access to researchers and long-term preservation.
This process involves:
- cleaning collection,
- assessing negatives for damage and preservation concerns,
- placing negatives into archival enclosures and boxes,
- creating electronic finding aids to the collection using Bauman's handwritten and typed paper indexes.
During this process, the collection is open on a limited basis. To date over 25,000 envelopes containing over 100,000 negatives have been processed and indexed. If you would like to request a photograph or want more for information about the collection please contact the Director of Archives and Historical Collections, Nicole Casper at ncasper@stonehill.edu or visit our Bauman Reference Page.
