Guide for Foreign Nationals
Stonehill College must comply with federal regulations regarding the employment of foreign nationals (non-US citizens and non-permanent residents). Federal immigration law regulates the hiring of foreign nationals, requiring employers to hire only U.S. citizens, permanent resident aliens, and aliens legally authorized to work in the United States.
The most common nonimmigrant visa categories for research and teaching activities are:
- J-1 Exchange Visitor
- H-1B Visas for Temporary Workers in Specialty Occupations
- F-1 and J-1 Students on Practical or Academic Training
- TN Visas for Professionals who are nationals of Canada and Mexico
- O-1 Visas for Individuals of Extraordinary Ability in their field of expertise
When interviewing candidates, they will complete the Foreign National Information form (linked below) while on campus. If a decision is made to extend an offer to an individual who is in need of one of the above visas to be able to commence employment, the following must be done:
- The Human Resources office must be notified of the offer prior to commencement of this process
- The applicant information and Foreign National form are forwarded to the Office of the President
- The candidate will then meet with the President
- An application will be made on behalf of the candidate for the appropriate visa
