Why did you decide to study history and pursue a career in higher education?

I decided I wanted to pursue History as a career after my very first day attending a History course at Mount Holyoke. I loved the environment of a college campus and I found the atmosphere in a lecture hall electrifying. I remain excited and challenged by the drama, humanity and complexity of unearthing our past. I was one of those strange kids who had Civil War heroine coloring books and won prizes for memorizing the state capitols and presidents by heart. So I’ve always been a history nerd and getting to spend my days indulging my peculiar passion is really a dream come true. It’s never, ever boring for me and though I’m a specialist in Early American history, I’m interested in the history of everything: watches, sugar, the Silk Road, medicine; everything has a history that can help us understand the present better.

What has been your greatest experience as a professor at Stonehill?

Far and away my favorite experiences are when I encounter a student who declares how much they hate history, and by the time the semester ends, they end up loving it. I don’t possess any special magic; I just try to restore the drama, excitement, controversy, and down to earth human-ness of the past that seems to get strip-mined out by textbooks and many high school history courses. Helping pass my passion for the subject on to a younger generation feels both deeply fulfilling and a little bit patriotic, as it cultivates the critical thinking skills and civic literacy so crucial in a democratic republic.  I also love mentoring students, especially helping them think about their strengths and goals and chart a path toward a fulfilling career.
