Laptop Recommendations for Students

Stonehill provides several electronic classrooms and labs where students can use computers, software and printers to meet the requirements of their courses.  Most students find that a personal laptop enables them to work and study in class and throughout the campus.

Mac or PC

Our core technology services, like eLearn and the wireless network, support both platforms.  Most recently student computers comprised 53% PC and 47% Mac OS.  Students should consider their intended major as the Business Department requires students in their programs to have a laptop computer capable of running the Windows operating system.   Students who major in Graphic Design may prefer a Mac since most of their courses use labs with Mac computers.  Specific questions about curriculum requirements should be discussed with the Chairperson of the academic department or their designee.

Recommended Hardware Specifications

The following information is provided as a general guideline to help with the purchase of a new laptop.  We recommend purchasing a business grade laptop from a leading vendor like HP, as they are built for mobility and tend to last longer.  However, a system purchased within the last two years should meet the needs of most students.

Warranty

We recommend consideration of a 3-year warranty which typically covers manufacturers’ defects like CPU and hard drive failures. Most leading vendors also offer enhanced 4-year Accidental Damage Protection coverage, which covers parts, labor, and replacement costs for any malfunction.

Software

Students are licensed to download Office 365 Pro Plus on up to 5 devices, providing full versions of Office on PCs and Macs and mobile applications on iPhones, iPads, and Android phones while they are enrolled at Stonehill.  In addition, students have access to Office in all labs and classrooms as well as the Office web applications through their email service.  Students with PCs are required to have an updated version of antivirus software before they can register on the Stonehill network.  We provide Symantec antivirus  to students who need it.
