The CTL is excited to announce that Professor José Bowen, professor of music and Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, will be speaking as the fall 2013 keynote about his new book, Teaching Naked.
Bowen argues that the best place for technology is outside the classroom—where it can be used to introduce students to new material—so that class time can better be devoted to the meaningful face-to-face engagement that is the hallmark of residential education.
You can get a preview of Dr. Bowen's work in the following videos: Teaching Naked: TEDxLSU; José Bowen, SMU's Meadows School of the Arts. Plus, copies of Dr. Bowen's book are available in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Contact Pat Neagle to request one.
We are also pleased to be partnering with the Office of Disability Services to host an afternoon workshop with Jane Thierfield Brown on "Working with Students with Asperger Syndrome."
Author of Students with Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for College Personnel, Dr. Brown has 33 years experience working in disability services. Her workshop will provide faculty insight into the particular experiences of students with Asperger Syndrome, as well as practical advice for helping these students succeed.
