Katherine Blessis ’16 wanted to gain some experience in the face-paced world of TV news and hoped to do it in Boston. With the help of Stonehill’s Office of Career Services, she made it happen through an internship at 7NBC WHDH-TV.
“I pursued this opportunity because it allowed me to combine the two areas I love most: public relations and journalism,” said Katherine, who is a communication major from Granby, Connecticut. “I was constantly surrounded by the exciting world of news, but was able to do other things for public relations that interest me even more. Also, the internship was in Boston, the best city in my opinion!”
Internships are integral for preparing you for post-graduate success and the guidance and resources you find here are a big part of why 85 percent of Stonehill students complete at least one internship prior to graduation. It’s valuable opportunity to gain experience, build a professional network and learn more about yourself and potential careers.
Through her internship in the WHDH Public Relations Department, Katherine wrote and published events for the WHDH Community Calendar, lead station tours, helped in the production of station-sponsored events, and responded to viewers’ questions and comments about programming.
“I could always count on Katherine’s superb writing skills to represent WHDH properly online,” said Kara-Marie Joyce, Katherine’s supervisor. “Plus, she always remained calm during breaking news situations when viewer calls typically rush into the station. ”
Katherine is a transfer student from Emerson College and said she chose to move to Stonehill because of its supportive and welcoming community.
“Everyone is willing to help you with whatever you need,” she said, adding that she hopes after graduation to move to Boston and pursue a career in public relations. “Transferring was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”
