On Thursday evening, Fox 25 News Boston came to campus to film a segment about one of Stonehill’s newest clubs- Love Your Melon, whose mission is to improve the lives of children battling cancer. The segment is scheduled to air on FOX 25 Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Created by two students at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota in 2012, Love Your Melon has surged into the national spotlight with 225 schools creating their own chapters, each of which have the simple idea of putting a hat on every child battling cancer in America.
Stonehill’s chapter was recently started by Sage Feltus ’18, who lost a friend to pediatric cancer, and Erica Bigelow ’18. A number of students, many of which have dealt with childhood friends battling cancer, have already joined the group. By Friday, they already sold 125 hats, allowing them to make their first in-person donation at Worcester’s Why Me & Sherry's House, which helps families cope with childhood cancer. The hats sold are donated in person at hospitals nationally by Love Your Melon college ambassadors dressed as superheroes.
The national Love You Melon group is now partnering with the Pinky Swear Foundation to provide immediate support for children battling cancer and with CureSearch for Children’s Cancer to fund research initiatives to beat childhood cancer completely. Love Your Melon recently launched a new model to replace its buy one, give one program where now 50% of net proceeds on every Love Your Melon product sold will be donated to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch.
