The Martin Institute at Stonehill College will host Massachusetts State Auditor Suzanne Bump on Monday, March 30th at 11:30 a.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, is funded by a generous grant from The Howard Home Fund. Lunch will be provided at the event, therefore a reservation is required.
Bump believes accountability in government is not just a willingness to admit a mistake. “Real accountability requires planning and then using taxpayer dollars wisely to minimize government failures and misspending. It also demands honesty,” says Bump, who will apply these principles in a discussion of her work, some recent events, and what they mean for the future.
Bump is the 25th Auditor of the Commonwealth and the first female to serve in the role. Upon taking office in 2011, Bump was able to lead her office in just three years from failing an outside review from the National State Auditor’s Association to receiving its highest rating in 2014.
Prior to her election, Bump served in Governor Deval Patrick’s cabinet as Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development and had represented the Town of Braintree for eight years in the House of Representatives. In the private sector, she worked as a business advocate, legal counsel, and has sat on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations including the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and St. Francis House.
She currently chairs the Municipal Finance Oversight Board, serves on the board of the Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission, the Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System, and is the Immediate Past President of the Association of Governmental Accounting’s Boston Chapter.
A native of Whitman, Massachusetts, Bump attended Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton and is a graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University School of Law.
Parking for the event will be available behind the Ames Sports Complex in The Sally Blair Ames South Lot on the Stonehill campus. For questions or to make a reservation, contact Noelle Preston at 508-565-1131 or email@example.com .
