Marketing major Corinne Sherman ’11 says she likes to move fast and it’s clear from her accomplishments both at Stonehill and in the workplace that she does so in one direction: Up.
Corinne, who came to Stonehill from Hebron, Conn., graduated at the top of her class and left the College with four internship experiences. Little more than a year later she joined eBay as part of the company’s first Global Social Analytics team and quickly began taking on leadership roles.
Now she has six patents pending in the field of social commerce.
“My degree provided me the ability to concentrate on the areas of Marketing that I was the most passionate about,” says Corinne, who was recruited by eBay based on an internship she completed at PayPal. “As I continue to grow as a social analytics expert, I am forever thankful that my Stonehill Marketing degree allowed me to be a true innovator and specialize in this field.”
Connecting Current Students with the eBay World
Like many graduates, Corinne also maintains ties with Stonehill that she hopes will help others also launch successful careers. The most exciting collaboration is an ongoing market research project she helped initiate, involving students in Professor Robert Spencer’s Policy and Strategy course. This semester the students are examining how young adults incorporate their technology and social interactions into their on-line buying and selling habits.
In addition to the knowledge gained in Stonehill’s Marketing program, Corinne said she also gained a great deal in her four internships – including one at social marketing consultant SheSpeaks that transitioned into her first job after graduating – and through Stonehill’s NYC Externship Program, an intense weeklong networking experience focusing on career exploration.
“The NYC Externship was definitely one of the most valuable and rewarding programs I have been a part of at Stonehill,” says Corinne. “I walked away with two outstanding summer internship offers, a wealth of high-level business connections and a much better understanding of how 'the real world' works.”
Passions that Translate into Expertise
Now her growing expertise in social data, analysis and strategy and is helping eBay better understand its customer base. She recently led an eBay team that built the company’s first Social Commerce Dashboard and is developing innovative solutions, some of which may soon be patented under her name, focused on social data and Social Network Optimization for the company.
Her professors say Corinne’s drive and commitment helped her excel in Marketing and are key ingredients in a recipe for success for anyone interested in following a similar path. “She showed great motivation and enthusiasm toward her major … and demonstrated her talent with great performance in all the classes,” says Marketing Professor Eddie Rhee who was Corinne’s advisor and who still keeps in touch with her. Corinne gives just as much credit to Rhee.
“Stonehill provided me the opportunity to push myself,” she says, “to explore my intellectual curiosity and to learn how I learn.”
