Monday Morning Update

May 20, 2013

Commencement: On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, Stonehill celebrated its 62nd Commencement by graduating the largest class in the College’s 65-year history. Before 2,000 family, friends, faculty, staff and alumni, 633 students walked across the stage to receive their degrees.

Special Number: When she received her degree, Jenna Lee Morris became the 24,000th student to graduate from Stonehill.

Advice: Commencement Speaker Sheri McCoy had three pieces of advice for the Class of 2013. The Chief Executive Officer of Avon Products, McCoy spoke of her own career as she told the graduates to (1) continue seeking out mentors (2) take risks and (3) never stop learning. She also noted that “sometimes your failures can be your best teacher.”

Lessons Learned:  Student speaker Frances Walsh ’13 reminded her classmates that “While we may be reluctant to leave Stonehill, our temporary home, we must go forward recognizing that the best in our lives is always around the corner. The lessons we learned in college, the people we met, and the experiences that have lit our passions are not behind us. Instead, they are part of us forevermore.”

Alumni Welcome: Speaking on behalf of the 61 previous graduating classes, Alumni Council President Cathy Campbell ’96 welcomed our newest alumni into the fold and invited them to remain engaged with the College.

Class Gift:  Class President Lindsey Beauregard and Vice President William O’Donnell presented the College with a class gift of $13,000, which is also the largest class gift in our history. Thank You Seniors!!

Honorees: President Mark Cregan, C.S.C. ’78 presented honorary degrees to Commencement Speaker Sheri McCoy (Doctor of Humane Letters), Thomas May ’69 (Doctor of Business Administration), Donna (Jermyn) May ’70 (Doctor of Humane Letters) and Dr. George Martin (Doctor of Education).

Farewell Theme: In presiding over his last Commencement, President Cregan spoke about the importance of love and gratitude, a theme he wrote about in the recent Alumni Magazine.

Fun Fact: Over his 13 year tenure, Fr. Cregan has given degrees to more than 7,360 students, which represents about 30 percent of all Stonehill graduates.

Tenth President: On Friday afternoon, the Board of Trustees elected the Rev. John Denning, C.S.C. as the College’s tenth President. Fr. Denning will assume the presidency on July 1. Within minutes of Fr. Denning being name as the next president, more than 150 members of the Stonehill community gathered outside of Alumni Hall to greet him.
