Stonehill Student Competes in Worldwide Digital Banking Innovation Competition

November 26, 2014

Working with three students from Florida International University, finance and economics double major Daniel Doherty ’15 recently competed in the Citi Mobile Challenge, which brings together the most talented and creative developers and designers to create cutting-edge applications for Citi's Digital Banking Platforms. Citibank is the largest bank holding company in the U.S.

A Woburn native, Doherty met his teammates while working in New York this past summer for Goldman Sachs, a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm. While there, the group developed a Bitcoin application.

Doherty’s team, Decentral Bank, applied for the Citi Mobile Challenge and was one of 20 teams selected to present in Miami. More than 3,000 teams applied for the challenge and Doherty and his teammates were the only undergraduate students selected to compete.

“All other presenters were either established start-ups and companies or graduate students,” said Doherty, who also noted he and his teammates received follow-up requests from a Managing Director in Digital Strategy at Citi. The group was also featured in an article about the Citi Mobile Challenge in the Miami Herald.

Doherty, who was the recipient of the Stonehill Class of 2015 Leadership Award last spring, has already secured a job at Goldman Sachs following his graduation from Stonehill this coming May. He currently serves as the Executive Treasurer of the Student Government Association on campus.
