Long-time Stonehill Campus Minister Rev. Thomas Halkovic, C.S.C. ’67 died on Saturday, September 9.
At the heart of Campus Ministry’s pastoral outreach, Fr. Halkovic, who retired earlier this year, oversaw retreat and sacramental programs. A polished homilist, he also organized liturgies and, over the years, he officiated at many alumni weddings both in the Chapel of Mary and at many off-campus locations.
“An educator in the faith, Fr. Tom devoted his life to serving our community with compassion and a deep sense of spirituality, and he always worked to make God known, loved and served. He went about his ministry with understatement and integrity, and we will miss his presence, wisdom and friendship, “ said President John Denning, C.S.C.
Megan (Killilea) Richmond ’04 recalls first meeting Fr. Halkovic when she got involved with Campus Ministry, “Fr. Tom had a way about him. He listened and he cared. He drew you in and gave you confidence to speak up. Talking to him was like talking to family, whether it was about life or God or meaning. You could rely on him for sound advice. Like so many others, I kept in touch with him after I graduated and I am proud to say that he married me and my husband, Dan, and that meant so much to us to have his blessing.”
At retreats organized by Fr. Halkovic, prayer and reflection were always to the fore. His style was to invite students to reflect on the theme of Self, Christ, and Others, and how to incorporate those three elements into their lives. In addition, he enjoyed having fun and knew how to prepare beautiful food that brought participants together in conversation and spiritual contemplation.
When he celebrated his 25th anniversary of being a priest in 1996, Fr. Halkovic wrote, “I have never had a moment when I regretted the choice that I have made. Being a priest is one of the most fulfilling things a person could choose.”
Before he joined Campus Ministry in 1994, Fr. Halkovic served as the College’s Director of Student Activities from 1990 to 1994 and, before that, he was a residence hall director from 1989-1990.
Fr. Halkovic made his first profession in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1964 and was ordained a Holy Cross priest in 1971. In addition to his bachelor degree in philosophy from Stonehill, he held a master of theology degree from the University of Notre Dame and a graduate studies certificate in counseling from Fairfield University.
Prior to coming to Stonehill, Fr. Halkovic worked at the Immaculate High School in Danbury, Conn. as a guidance counselor from 1978 to 1982 and as a director of guidance from 1982 to 1989. He was a guidance counselor and teacher at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Conn. from 1974 to 1978 and a religion teacher at both Notre Dame High School in Fairfield, Conn. and St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend, Ind. from 1972-1974 and 1970-1972 respectively.
Fr. Halkovic was a member of Stonehill’s Board of Incorporators. Active in the Congregation of Holy Cross, he was also a member of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association.
