New Exhibit Curated by Students at Carole Calo Gallery Features "Visionary Vistas"

November 3, 2014

The Carole Calo Gallery at Stonehill College is pleased to present Visionary Vistas from November 3 through December 12. The exhibit includes Massachusetts-based artists Sarah Meyers Brent , Christopher Chadbourne, Estelle Disch, Adam Lampton, Jennifer Langhammer, Michael Manning, Oscar Palacio, Cristi Rinklin, Mia Rosenblatt Tinkjian, and Lauren Wesley.

Visionary Vistas has been curated by students in Gallery Director Candice Smith Corby's Exhibitions and Collections course which includes Leah Budil '16, Chelsea Cardosa '15, Victoria Clifford '16, Jessie Lebowitz '15, Michael Lentz '15, Lucia Navarro '16, Peter Schlaht '15, and Thomas Wood '15.

In a departure from the traditional pastoral landscape, Visionary Vistas extends this genre’s own horizon into uncharted territory.  Using manipulated viewpoints, unusual combinations of media, and imaginative concepts that challenge reality, these ten artists demonstrate different directions in which contemporary landscape is evolving.

While some of these artists continue to use more traditional media such as photography, they seek to incorporate innovative techniques of digital manipulation and unexpected materials that test the viewer’s preconceived notion of landscape.  Other artists extend the notion of landscape beyond the typical two-dimensional form displayed on gallery walls, using three-dimensional media including ceramics and repurposed materials.

This exhibition explores the ideas of the artificial landscape, the impact of human construction on the environment, as well as the organic materials that make up the land itself. The creation of impossible realities and the illusion of work that poses as landscape bring us to question not only how we perceive our surroundings, but also how we interpret the genre’s technical and stylistic expansion.
