PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT IS JUST COMMON SENSE

When it comes to saving our environment, there are many ordinary things that each of us can do to use energy resources more wisely.

That was the message that Professor Eugene Quinn impressed upon his audience at Alumni Hall on November 7as part of Stonehill's Common Sense Lecture Series.

Quinn, an assistant professor of mathematics at Stonehill, discussed Living Green: 30 Years of Steps Toward a More Environmentally Friendly Lifestyle.

"Every day we make choices in our day-to-day lives that potentially impact not only ourselves, but everyone else on the planet, albeit in a modest way.  Even a small change in lifestyle can have an impact if enough people do it," he explained.

Quinn explored a series of changes he implemented that made a difference in terms of resources consumed in his household.  Some suggestions were to:

  • Use the cold water cycle on the washing machine.
  • Use the clothes line instead of the dryer.
  • Install flow restrictors on showers.
  • Don't use freezers.
  • Install cavity wall insulation.
  • Switch from notebook to desktop computers.
  • Use renewable energy, such as wind, solar, and hydro.
  • Switch to synthetic oil.
  • Use a fireplace converter.
  • Shut off pilot lights.
  • Empty car trunk.
  • Properly inflate tires on automobiles.
  • Join a car pool or use public transportation.

The lecture was sponsored by the Office of Student Activities.
