ENGLISH MAJORS HEAD TO DISTINGUISHED GRAD PROGRAMS

Graduating English majors are preparing for new chapters in their educational careers, as many have been accepted into distinguished graduate programs.

“The English Department has had remarkable success this year with graduate school placement,” said Rev. George Piggford, C.S.C., graduate studies advisor for the English department.

I believe it could be the highest number of English seniors continuing with graduate studies in the Department’s history. Nearly all of the students will enter literature programs.”

Critical Reading, Thinking and Writing
Reflecting on his Stonehill experience, Michael Ryan notes:

"The English faculty demanded of me rigor, clarity, and diligence; they helped me get there with patience, support, and personal attention. At Stonehill I learned the disciplines of critical reading, critical thinking, and critical writing."

According to Lindsay Bogner, "The English Department has both prepared me for this experience and has also inspired my love of literature, and the faculty have challenged me to become a critical thinker and to articulate this through my writing. I feel ready to make this exciting transition to graduate level work."

Exceptional Group
"This is an exceptional group in their talents and their willingness to engage with literature, history, theory, and methodology. Hard working and motivated, they have been wonderfully challenging to work with this year," said Piggford.

In addition to the prestigious list of graduate school acceptances, senior Mike Ryan – who will head to Boston University in the fall to begin his MA in English – was also a finalist for the American Graduate Fellowship offered by the Council of Independent Colleges.

Fr. Piggford noted, “It was an incredibly competitive year, which makes our students' success even more remarkable.”
