Background on the Fr. Moreau Prayer

Stonehill shares in Fr. Basil Moreau’s educational legacy which holds that education is a work of formation, not simple instruction and is most effective in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Fr. Moreau’s vision of education as a “work of resurrection” inspires us to pursue the blessings of new life that come from a pursuit of all that is true, beautiful and good.

His belief that education never “deprives our students of anything they should know” spurs us to academic excellence in every discipline of study.

For Fr. Moreau, education forms the whole person such that the “mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart,” leading us to value the co-curricular and spiritual dimensions of our collegiate life.

His commitment to forming students “into justice” underlies our mission of educating students to lead “with courage toward creating a more just and compassionate world.”

May this blessing inspire all members of our community to embrace with ever deepening zeal Stonehill’s noble mission.

Lord God, in the mystery of
your providential love
I was blessed with the privilege
of a Stonehill education.

I thank you for the generous faculty,
administrators, staff and
fellow students who accompanied
me during my years at Stonehill.

I praise you for the ways in which
my mind and heart were nurtured
in wisdom and goodness through
caring mentors both inside
and outside the classroom.

Lord God, as I lift up my mind
and heart to you in gratitude, I
ask your continued blessing upon
my life and the lives of all I hold dear.

May the values and ideals I have learned
at Stonehill College continue to inform
my every decision so that I may
act with courage to make the world a
more just and compassionate place.

May I find in you the ultimate
source of light and hope.

Through the intercession of
Blessed Basil Moreau
preserve Stonehill in
its noble mission
of forming good citizens
for earth and heaven.

And bless me and all my
loved ones with the gift of
peace that the world cannot give.
