CARNES NAMED INTERIM POLICE CHIEF

Former Yarmouth Police Chief Peter Carnes is the College’s Interim Chief of Police as of January 7, 2008.

From 1995 until recently, Carnes led the police department in the Town of Yarmouth.

Carnes began his career in law enforcement as a patrolman with the Wenham Police Department and advanced through the department to become Chief of Police for the town, a position he held from 1984-1995 when he moved to Yarmouth.

“We appreciate Chief Carnes being so willing to assist the College during this time of transition. He brings to the position professional experience and a proven record of law enforcement leadership and of community outreach,” said Roger Goode, associate vice president for operations, who oversees Campus Police.

Goode added that “The search for a full-time police chief, which began in November when Chief David DiNapoli resigned, will continue. I know that Chief Carnes has expressed interest in applying for the position."

Carnes is a past president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association. He holds an associate degree from North Shore Community College (1973), a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University (1977), and master’s degree from Anna Maria College (1991).

He is a registered emergency medical technician and has additional specialized law enforcement education. He has been an adjunct faculty member at Cape Cod Community College and at North Shore Community College.

The Stonehill College Campus Police Department is comprised of 11 patrol officers, four sergeants, one lieutenant, and two community service officers. A fulltime professional law enforcement department, Campus Police serves the more than 3,000 members of the Stonehill community. It not only protects their safety but also ensures the security of buildings, property and equipment on the College’s 384 acre campus.
