First Year Student Writing Contest

The Joseph Martin Institute invites submissions of poetry, fiction, personal or journalistic essays, related to its 2007-2008 theme for its student Writing Contest.

THEME: WAR

HONORS AND AWARDS
A $500 Honorarium will be awarded to one student whose work powerfully and uniquely investigates and responds to the theme of “War”.  In addition to the honorarium, the winning student will receive the title, Martin Fellow in Letters, will have their work published in Rolling Stonehill, and will receive bound copies of the work.  One copy will remain on display in the Martin Institute .  

Two other student artists will receive Honorable Mentions, and their work will also be placed in display in the Martin Institute .

The Martin Fellow in Letters will chair a student committee comprised of the students receiving Honorable Mentions to organize the Martin Student Writing Contest in 2008-2009.  The Martin Fellow will also serve on the committee to choose next year’s winners.

ENTRANTS

All entries must be from full-time first-year Stonehill students. Submissions should be original, unpublished work demonstrating superior quality of expression and craftsmanship.

SUBMISSIONS

Entries should not exceed 7,500 words. No entrant may send more than one submission, and entries must be delivered to the Martin Institute , Room 233 by February 1, 2008.  Winners will be chosen by members of the Martin Institute Faculty Steering Committee with assistance from others.

MANUSCRIPTS

Entries must be typewritten (one side only, please) double-spaced, and accompanied by a cover sheet with the following information: title, word count, author's name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Of this information, only the title should appear on the manuscript itself.

NOTIFICATION DATE

Winners will receive notification in April.  The Martin Fellow in Letters will be asked to give a reading of the work at Meditations on War”,  an event to be held in Alumni Hall the evening of April 9, 2008.  All winning pieces will also be put on display for Academic Achievement Day and the College’s Honors Ceremony.
