Cheryl E. McGrath

Biography

Cheryl McGrath is the Director of the MacPhaidin Library, overseeing the MacPhaidin Library, and Archives and Historical Collections.  Before coming to Stonehill in 2012, she was part of the senior leadership team for Harvard College Library, heading Access Services for Widener and Lamont libraries.  Prior to Harvard, she was the Head of Access Services for Stanford University Libraries, and Head of Circulation for Emerson College Library.  Cheryl began her library career as a Reference Associate for Greene County Public Library, Ohio.

Cheryl has extensive experience in moving collections, having assisted with Emerson College Library’s move from the former Governor's mansion at 150 Beacon Street to it’s current location.  At Stanford, Cheryl developed the workflows for a new high-density storage facility and oversaw the move of over 1 million books, serials, and special collections into the climate controlled, highly secure space.  She also became a certified forklift operator. Once the high-density facility was operational, Cheryl turned her attention to the logistics for the Google Book Project. In her spare time, Cheryl processed the Allen Ginsberg photo collection.

Cheryl also has experience developing software solutions to enhance library patron experiences.  While at Harvard, Cheryl was on the team that launched Scan and Deliver, a service model for electronic document delivery that has since been replicated at Yale and University of Chicago among other higher-ed institutions.  Cheryl also worked with programmers from the Berkman Center to develop Inscriptio, an online carrel seating application she imagined that was funded by Arcadia via Library Lab.  Cheryl also worked with colleagues at Harvard and Yale to develop SecureExit, gate check security software.  The installation of this product at Yale aided in successful theft detection.  Both Inscriptio and SecureExit will be featured in an upcoming chapter of an ALA Editions publication.
