Mathcounts 2005

Congratulations to the 2005 SASSDS Math Team
6th place in the Regional Level

The MSPE Northeast competition was held at the McCarthy Middle School in Chelmsford on Wednesday, February 16, 2005.  Thanks to the parents of Zeke Waisel, Matt Birnbaum, and Jesse Katz for driving.

The team this year was:

Team I
Team II

Avi Packer,  Captain     (Grade 8) Matt Birnbaum, Captain (Grade 8)
Jesse Katz                   (Grade 8) Meital Haas                   (Grade 8)
Zach Kriegel                 (Grade 8)
Zeke Waisel                  (Grade 7)
Josh Kriegel                 (Grade 8)
Jeremy Sawyer            (Grade 6)

There was an exciting new incentive this year. The top four contestants at the State competition (to be held in March 2005) will be eligible for four year full tuition scholorships to Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. (in the event that the top four contestants are all boys, a fifth scholorship will be awarded to the top female contestant). Winners from the Northeast Chapter competition will compete in the State competition.

We came in 6th this year and did not qualify for the state level competition.  Nevertheless, the team did a better than average showing, got some needed experience, and conducted themselves with real self-respect and pride.  I am very proud of all of them.

The team was chosen via competition open to all middle school students.   The top eight scores made the team.  The 2004 team includes four repeat mathletes, Jesse Katz, Zach and Josh Kriegel, Meital Haas.    Avi Packer, Matt Birnbaum, and Zeke Waisel made their rookie debuts with Avi having the highest qualifying score of all including the veterans.  Jeremy Sawyer also joined us as a 6th grader, giving him a rare opportunity to get some early experience.   The qualifying scores ranged from 16 to 34.

2005 Regional Results

Fourteen schools competed comprising 28 teams with over 100 students.  Our first team came in 6th place with a score of 37.5/66.  (The team score is the average of the four indivdual scores plus twice the team event.  This was 27.5 + 2*5 = 37.5.  For more details about scoring see competition).

The top three teams in order were Doherty, Andover, and Maimonides.  None of our mathletes made the top ten scores for the countdown round, but four (Zach Kriegel, Avi Packer, Jesse Katz, and Meital Haas), were in the top 20 students with scores of 31, 30, 29, and 27, respectively.  Zeke Waisel improved his score from 18 to 24, an excellent result.  The only two students who will not be graduating are Zeke Waisel in 7th grade  and Jeremy Sawyer in 6th grade.  I hope they will be back next year, along with a fresh crop of new fresh mathletes.   Let's look forward to 2006.
