How to Compute Your Grade
Homework and Quizzes: Althought they will have different RAW scores (for example x/10 or y/35 or z/78), all homeworks and quizzes are weighted the same. At the end of the semester I divide the total homework/quiz weight by the number of quizzes and exams. This gives me amount each homework/quiz contributes to your final grade. The raw score for each homework/quiz is then converted into a weighted score. The weighted scores are then added up to give a weighted total for homework/quizzes.
For example, if you have three homeworks and two quizzes which contribute 55 points to your final grade, then each has a weight of: 55/5 = 11 points.
Homework/Quiz | Raw Score | Weight | Weighted Score |
Homework Zero | 8/10 | 11 | 8.8 |
Homework One | 35/42 | 11 | 9.2 |
Homework Two | 72/90 | 11 | 8.8 |
Quiz Zero | 95/100 | 11 | 10.5 |
Quiz One | 105/110 | 11 | 10.5 |
Total | xxx | 55 | 47.8 |
Mid Term and Final Exam: The raw score for each of these exams is converted to a weighted score based on the weight of each exam, for example if the Mid-Term and Final are each weighted 15 points of your final grade:
Exam | Raw Score | Weight | Weighted Score |
Mid-Term Exam | 76/88 | 15 | 13.0 |
Final Exam | 90/92 | 15 | 14.7 |
Total | xxx | 30 | 27.7 |
Projects: The raw score for each project is converted to weighted score based on the weight of each project, for example if there is one final project weighted 15 points of your final grade:
Project | Raw Score | Weight | Weighted Score |
Final Project | 85/100 | 15 | 12.75 |
Total | xxx | 15 | 12.75 |
Final Grade: Your unscaled grade is the sum of your weighted scores. In our example the weighted score is an 88.25. Now that is at least a B+, but it could end up as an A- or A depending on whether or not I decide to scale grades in the class. I make this decision at the very end of the semester.
