Joe is a partner and co-chair of the mergers and acquisitions practice group at Foley Hoag LLP. His practice focuses on complex cross-border mergers and acquisitions, control and minority investments, joint venture and strategic alliances in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Latin American. He also advises publicly held companies regarding securities law issues, disclosure and compliance matters and corporate governance.
Prior to joining Foley Hoag in 2014, Joe was managing partner of the Boston office of Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP. His career has also included the practice of corporate law with Wall Street law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore and with the legal department of United Technologies Corporation, where Joe was Assistant General Counsel. In addition to practicing law, Joe has served as a member of the full-time faculty at Western New England College School of Law, and as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Law and at Western New England.
Joe has been consistently recognized as a leading M&A lawyer by professional ranking publications, including Chambers USA, Legal 500, Best Lawyers in America, and Practical Law Company. He is also an active member of the International Bar Association and of the Section on International Law of the American Bar Association (where he serves as a vice chair of the International M&A and Joint Ventures Committee).
Joe is also active in non-profit and civic affairs. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable and the Advisory Council of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine. He is former member of the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission.
Joe graduated summa cum laude from Stonehill in 1974 with a bachelor of arts in political science. He went on to graduate cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1977.
Since graduating from Stonehill, Joe has been active in the affairs of the College. He has served as a member of the Visiting Committee on Business Administration since 2002 and as a member of the Board of Fellows from 2010 until his election to the Board of Trustees in 2012. Joe also co-chairs the Board of Advisors for the Joseph W. Martin, Jr., Institute for Law & Society. In 2009, he received the annual award presented by the St. Thomas More Law Society, Stonehill's student-run pre law organization, to a Stonehill alumnus for his or her dedication to public service and the law.
Joe lives in Boston with his wife, Maureen Sweeny. He has two daughters, Lisa Basile Premerlani and Amy Basile '04.
