Joe is a partner at Foley Hoag and Co-Chair of the firm’s M&A Practice. He specializes in representing leading global corporations and private and sovereign investment funds in their most challenging deals. Joe’s practice focuses on cross-border M&A transactions, control and minority investments, joint ventures and strategic alliances in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Latin America. He also has extensive experience in distressed M&A transactions and financial restructurings. In addition to transactional work, Joe also advises publicly held companies regarding corporate governance, strategies for engagement with activist shareholders, securities law issues, disclosure and compliance
Joe has been consistently recognized as a leading M&A lawyer by professional ranking publications, including Chambers USA and Practical Law Company. He is also a regular speaker and frequent author on mergers and acquisitions and corporate law topics.
Joe is also active in non-profit and civic affairs. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, the Board of trustees of St. Columbkille Partnership School and the Advisory Council of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine. He is former member of the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission.
Joe graduated summa cum laude from Stonehill in 1974 with a bachelor of arts in political science. He went on to graduate cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1977.
Since graduating from Stonehill, Joe has been active in the affairs of the College. He has serves as a member of the Visiting Committee on Business Administration since 2002 and as a member of the Board of Fellows from 2010 until his election to the Board of Trustees in 2012. Joe also co-chairs the Board of Advisors for the Joseph W. Martin, Jr., Institute for Law Society. In 2009, he received the annual award presented by the St. Thomas More Law Society, Stonehill’s student-run pre law organization, to a Stonehill alumnus for his or her dedication to public service and the law.
Joe lives in Boston with his wife Maureen Sweeny. He has two daughters, Lisa Basile Premerlani and Amy Basile ’04.
